Cooking Basics Activity

Choose one activity from the two options below (or try both!) and have fun.

Option 1: Cook the Basics Yourself!

Directions to cooking the basics yourself:

  1. Gather Materials:

      • Computer or phone to view videos

      • Cooking materials based on the recipe you choose

      • Ingredients based on the recipe you choose

      • Pen/Pencil

      • Paper

  2. Watch these 4 videos and choose 1 of these meals to make.

  3. Get cooking! Gather all the kitchen tools that you will need.

      • Note: these videos show multiple ways to cook something, so make sure to choose just 1! For example, you can decide to cook the scrambled eggs from the egg video.

  4. Follow the guidance of the video and make sure you have an adult in the kitchen with you while you’re cooking.

  5. When you’re done cooking, it’s time to eat your home-cooked meal and enjoy your efforts.

  6. Answer the following questions in at least 1 full sentence:

      • How does the food taste? Too much salt? Perfect seasoning? Too hot? Just right?

Option 2: Create a Comic Strip - Cooking Edition!

Directions to creating a cooking comic strip:

  1. Gather Materials:

      • Computer or phone to view videos

      • Pen/pencil

      • Crayons/markers/colored pencils

      • Paper

  2. Watch the videos a-d from Option 1.

  3. Draw one of the videos, step-by-step, on how you make something – like a comic strip!

      • Note: these videos show multiple ways to cook something, so make sure just to choose 1! For example, you can decide to draw step-by-step how to make a poached egg from the egg video.

  4. Once you're done drawing all the different steps, write the instructions at the bottom of each frame.

      • Example: Step1 - crack an egg into a bowl. Step 2 - boil water. Step 3 - drop egg into boiling water.

  5. Answer the following question in 1 sentence or more:

      • Why is this home-cooked meal is healthier than if you get the same meal at a fast-food joint?
