The Culture of Food Activity

Choose one activity from the two options below (or try both!) and have fun.

Option 1: Cook a Family Recipe!

Directions to cooking your family recipe:

  1. Gather Materials:

      • Cooking materials based on the family recipe you choose

      • Ingredients based on the family recipe you choose

      • Pen/Pencil

      • Paper

  2. Choose a family recipe that you feel represents your culture or heritage.

      • Example: If my family is from Italy and I grew up eating pasta, maybe I’ll choose to cook pasta and make my own tomato sauce!

  3. Choose 1 person to cook this recipe with, and they must be older.

  4. Cook it together by following the steps of the recipe and dividing the tasks equally.

  5. You’re done! Now, take a picture of the final product! How beautiful is that?!

  6. Write 2 sentences answering the following questions:

      • How does it taste? Does it taste similar to when someone else makes it? (1 sentence)

      • How does it feel to cook a family recipe yourself? (1 sentence)

Option 2: Holiday Deep-Dive

Directions for the holiday deep-dive:

  1. Gather Materials:

      • Pen/pencil

      • Paper

  2. Pick a holiday or special occasion.

  3. Write 4 sentences answering the following questions:

      • Which country does this holiday come from? (1 sentence)

      • What food is typically prepared and eaten on this day? (1 sentence)

      • Explain how the food is central to this day. (1 sentence)

      • Why is this holiday important to you and your family? (1 sentence)
